The Expedition of Grand Amiral Djezairli Ghazi Hasan Pasha to Egypt
Abstract
Egypt, which was annexed to Ottoman territory by I. Selim (1512 – 1520) at the 16th century, was
transformed into an autonomous state by considerable preservation of its current administrative and
military structures after its conquest. Egypt remained in turmoil until the end of the 17th century due to
the influence struggles of the governors and the odjak aghas. In the 18th century, the central administration
actually lost control of Egypt when the Mamluks was included in this rivalry and seized power. In this
study, the expedition of Kaptan-ı Derya Cezayirli Gazi Hasan Paşa to Egypt in 1786 for the purpose of reestablishing
the authority of the central administration and some of the regulations that he put into practice
for this purpose will be discussed.
