İngiltere Kralı II. Charles’ı (1660-1685) yaklaşık dokuz yıl boyunca Osmanlı topraklarında temsil eden Winchilsea Kontu Heneage Finch (1627/28-1689) İstanbul’dan 1669 Mart’ında ayrıldığında, diplomatik ve ticarî misyonunu sürdürmesi için Levant Kumpanyası’ndan selefi Sir Daniel Harvey (1631-1672) çoktan Pera’daydı. Mart 1670’te İstanbul’daki elçiliğe papaz olarak atandığını öğrenen Cambridge Üniversitesi’ne bağlı Christ’s College’in idarecisi Dr. John Covel (1638-1722), aynı yılın 31 Aralık’ında Osmanlı payitahtına ulaştı ve 1671’in ilk günü ile birlikte, yedi yıl sürecek görevine başladı. Sir Harvey beklenmedik şekilde 26 Ağustos 1672 tarihinde kırk yaşında İstanbul’da vefat etti, vasiyeti üzerine cenazesinin İngiltere’ye gönderilmesi yaklaşık iki yıl sonra gerçekleşecekti. Böylece 1662 ahidnâmesinin yenilenmesi akim kaldı. Bu makale, İngiltere arşiv malzemesi ve elçilik papazı Dr. Covel’ın kendi eliyle yazdığı seyahatnâmesini esas alarak Sir Daniel Harvey’in IV. Mehmed tarafından Selânik’te huzura kabulünü, bundan sonraki elçilik dönemini ve vefatını ele almaktadır.
When Heneage Finch, Earl of Winchilsea (1627/28-1689), who had represented King Charles II of England (1660-1685) on Ottoman territory for nearly nine years, left Istanbul in March 1669, his predecessor Sir Daniel Harvey (1631-1672) of the Levant Company was already in Pera to continue his diplomatic and commercial mission. Dr John Covel (1638-1722) Master of Christ’s College, Cambridge University, who had learned of his appointment as chaplain to the embassy in Constantinople in March 1670, arrived in the Ottoman capital on 31 December of the same year and began his seven-year mission on the first day of 1671. Sir Harvey died unexpectedly in Constantinople on 26 August 1672 at the age of forty, and it would be nearly two years before his body was sent back to England. Thus, the renewal of the 1662 treaty failed. This article, based on British archival material and the travelogue manuscript by the embassy chaplain Dr Covel, examines the reception of Sir Daniel Harvey by Mehmed IV in Salonika, his subsequent ambassadorial period and his death.
