Year 2011, Issue: 50, 77 - 94, 01.04.2011

Abstract

Examining the Factors that Affect Extent of Banks’ Derivatives Usage

Year 2011, Issue: 50, 77 - 94, 01.04.2011

Abstract

Examining the Factors that Affect Extent of Banks’ Derivatives Usage Aim of this study is to examine effects of bank specific factors and macroeconomic variables on extent of derivative used by banks. Data was obtained from balance sheet and income statement of banks which listed on the Istanbul Stock Exchange (ISE) for the 1999-2010 periods. According to the results of Tobit regression analysis, it was found that return on equity and net interest margin was positively related to the extent of derivatives usage. It was found that there was a negative relationship between the extent of derivatives usage and bank size, allowances, and interest rates. These results indicate that the banks with higher return on equity and higher net interest margin, and the banks with smaller asset size tend to use derivatives more intensively.
