Medikal İllüstrasyonun Kısa Tarihçesi ve Ege Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Morfoloji Enstitüsü / Anatomi Anabilim Dalı’nın Kuruluşundan Günümüze Medikal İllüstrasyon Üretim Faaliyetlerine Işık Tutan Kanıtlar: Planşlar

Abstract

Amaç: Çalışma, ulusal ve uluslararası literatürde planşlar hakkındaki sınırlı bilgiyi genişletmek amacıyla bu planşların üretim süreçlerini, teknik özelliklerini ve anatomi eğitimindeki kullanım biçimlerini incelemeyi hedeflemiştir. Yöntem: Bu çalışma, Ege Üniversitesi Anatomi Anabilim Dalı arşivinde yer alan planşları incelemek amacıyla tarihsel doküman analizi yöntemi kullanmıştır. Ana veri kaynakları, planş kataloğu, eğitim materyali kayıt belgeleri, fotoğraflar ve planşların kendilerini içermektedir. Literatür taraması, planşların tarihsel ve eğitimsel önemini vurgularken, arşiv belgelerinin içerik analizi, verileri “teknik detaylar,” “eğitimde kullanım” ve “tarihsel bağlam” başlıkları altında sınıflandırmıştır. PubMed, Google Scholar ve Web of Science’da “planş,” “medikal illüstrasyon” ve “tıp eğitimi tarihi” gibi anahtar kelimelerle 1900-2024 yılları arasındaki medikal illüstrasyonun tarihsel gelişimi analiz edilmiştir. Bulgular: Türkiye Cumhuriyeti Dönemi’nin erken dönem profesyonel medikal illüstrasyon örneklerinden biri olan 2000’den fazla planş incelenmiştir. Bu planşların, eğitim hedeflerini karşılamak üzere titizlikle tasarlandığı ve dönemin teknolojik kısıtlamalarına rağmen yüksek görsel kalite sunduğu belirlenmiştir. Planşlar, bilgisayar teknolojilerinin eğitime entegrasyonuna kadar anatomi eğitiminde merkezi bir rol oynamıştır. Ancak, literatür taraması bu planşların uluslararası medikal illüstrasyon çalışmalarında sınırlı bir yere sahip olduğunu göstermiştir. Sonuç: Çalışma, Türkiye’deki sistematik medikal illüstrasyon faaliyetlerinin önemine ve bu planşların anatomi eğitimindeki görsel öğrenme süreçlerindeki kritik rolüne ışık tutmaktadır. Tıbbi illüstrasyon faaliyetlerinin sistematik olarak belgelenmesi ve kurumsal desteklerle geliştirilmesi gerekliliği vurgulanmıştır.

A Brief History of Medical Illustration and Evidence Shedding Light on Medical Illustration Production Activities from the Establishment of Ege University Faculty of Medicine, Institute of Morphology / Department of Anatomy: Planches

Abstract

Aim: The study aimed to address the scarcity of documentation on anatomical planches in both national and international literature by examining their production processes, technical characteristics, and applications in anatomy education. Method: This study employed a historical document analysis method to investigate anatomical planches archived in the Department of Anatomy at Ege University. The primary sources included the planche catalog, educational material records, photographs, and the planches themselves. Literature review highlighted their historical and educational significance, while content analysis of archival texts categorized data under “technical details,” “educational use,” and “historical context.” Searches in PubMed, Google Scholar, and Web of Science used keywords such as “plate,” “medical illustration,” and “history of medical education” to analyze the historical development of medical illustration between 1900 and 2024. Results: Over 2,000 plates, identified as some of the earliest professional medical illustrations during Turkey’s Republican Era, were examined. They were meticulously designed to meet educational objectives and demonstrated high visual quality despite technological limitations. The planches played a central role in anatomy education until the integration of computer technologies. However, a literature review revealed their minimal representation in global medical illustration research. Conclusion: This study highlights the significance of systematic medical illustration activities in Turkey and the importance of the planches in visual learning within anatomy education. It underscores the need for systematic documentation and institutional support to preserve and enhance the contributions of medical illustration to medical education. Keywords:
