A Tribute to Common Eponyms in Pathology Practice

Abstract

An eponym refers to a discovery, invention, or a specific period named after a person. The term "eponym" originates from the French word éponyme, which, in turn, derives from the Greek epi ("upon, related to") and ónoma ("name"). In medical terminology, numerous eponyms are used for naming diseases, anatomical structures, scoring systems, tumors, microorganisms, as well as diagnostic and therapeutic methods. In pathology practice, the nomenclature of neoplasms frequently includes the names of scientists who contributed to their discovery or characterization. Notably, with the widespread use of the microscope, the identification of tumors accelerated in the 19th century, and many tumors have since been named after scientists from that period. Some of these individuals identified the cells from which the tumors originated, while others directly described neoplastic lesions. It is particularly noteworthy that among the scientists covered in our review, two female researchers—Sophie Spitz and Maria Dabska—are included, considering the underrepresentation of women in the scientific community at the time. Additionally, prominent figures such as Sir James Paget, known as the father of pathology, Aldred Scott Warthin, a pioneer in cancer genetics, and Enrico Sertoli, who emphasized the importance of understanding the physiology of morphological structures, stand out in our study. We believe that the lives of these scientists are fascinating from multiple perspectives and that shedding light on their academic journeys will serve as an inspiration for future generations. With this perspective in mind, we present our article.

Patoloji Pratiğinde Sık Rastladığımız Eponimlere Bir Saygı Duruşu

Year 2025, Volume: 15 Issue: 2, 423 - 435, 30.05.2025
