Assessing the Information Quality and Reliability of Youtube Videos on Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Abstract

Aim: YouTube is widely utilized as a platform for obtaining health-related information; however, the accuracy and reliability of its content remain uncertain. This study investigated the informational quality and reliability of the most-viewed YouTube videos on hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and explored whether content quality was associated with video popularity. Videos uploaded by healthcare professionals were also compared with those uploaded by non-professionals. Methods: On November 1, 2025, a YouTube search was performed using the keyword “hyperbaric oxygen therapy.” The 50 most-viewed videos meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed. Non-English, duplicate, restricted-access, and videos shorter than one minute were excluded. Video popularity was assessed using views, likes, comments, view ratio, and the Video Power Index. Content quality was evaluated using DISCERN, modified DISCERN, JAMA benchmark criteria and the Global Quality Scale. Data were analyzed using the Mann–Whitney U test and Spearman’s correlation, with statistical significance set at p < 0.05. Results: Fifty videos were analyzed; 76% were uploaded by healthcare professionals and 24% by non-professionals. The median DISCERN score was 27 (range: 17–50), indicating low content quality. Videos uploaded by healthcare professionals had significantly higher DISCERN, modified DISCERN, and JAMA scores (p < 0.05). According to DISCERN classification, 58% of videos were low or very low quality. A weak positive correlation was found between DISCERN score and number of likes (ρ = 0.322; p = 0.022). Conclusion: Most YouTube HBOT videos are low iquality; stronger institutional involvement is needed

Hiperbarik Oksijen Tedavisi Konusunda Youtube Videolarının Bilgi Kalitesi ve Güvenirliğinin Değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Amaç: Amaç: Bu çalışmanın amacı, YouTube platformunda hiperbarik oksijen tedavisi (HBOT) ile ilgili en çok izlenen videoların bilimsel kalite ve güvenilirliğini değerlendirmek ve video popülaritesi ile içerik kalitesi arasındaki ilişkiyi incelemektir. Ayrıca videolar, yükleyici niteliğine göre gruplandırılarak sağlık profesyonelleri ve bağımsız kullanıcı içerikleri karşılaştırıldı. Yöntem: 1 Kasım 2025 tarihinde YouTube’da “hiperbarik oksijen tedavisi” anahtar kelimesi kullanılarak yapılan aramada en çok görüntülenen 50 video çalışmaya dahil edilmiştir. İngilizce olmayan, 1 dakikadan kısa, tekrar eden veya erişimi kısıtlı videolar dışlanmıştır. Videoların popülaritesi görüntülenme sayısı, beğeni sayısı, yorum sayısı, görüntülenme oranı ve Video Güç İndeksi ile değerlendirilmiştir. İçerik kalitesi DISCERN, modifiye DISCERN, JAMA ve Global Quality Scale skorları kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. İstatistiksel değerlendirmede Mann–Whitney U testi ile Spearman korelasyon analizi kullanılmış, anlamlılık sınırı p<0.05 olarak kabul edilmiştir. Bulgular: Toplam 50 video değerlendirilmiştir. Videoların %76’sı sağlık profesyonelleri, %24’ü bağımsız kullanıcılar tarafından yüklenmiştir. Medyan DISCERN skoru 27 (17–50) olup içeriklerin çoğu düşük kalitedir. Sağlık profesyonelleri tarafından yüklenen videoların DISCERN, modifiye DISCERN ve JAMA skorları istatistiksel olarak anlamlı şekilde daha yüksek olduğu görülmüştür (p<0.05). DISCERN sınıflamasına göre videoların %58’i kötü veya çok kötü kalite kategorisindedir. Popülarite göstergeleri ile DISCERN skoru arasında anlamlı korelasyon saptanmamış, yalnızca beğeni sayısı ile DISCERN skoru arasında zayıf fakat anlamlı pozitif korelasyon bulunmuştur (ρ=0.322; p=0.022). Sonuç: YouTube’da HBOT ile ilgili videoların önemli kısmı düşük kalite ve sınırlı güvenilirlik göstermektedir. Sağlık profesyonelleri tarafından hazırlanan içerikler daha yüksek kaliteye sahip olmakla birlikte popülerlik ile içerik kalitesi arasında anlamlı ilişki bulunmamaktadır. HBOT gibi uzmanlık gerektiren alanlarda güvenilir bilgi için akademik kurumlar daha aktif olmalıdır.
