Türkiye’de Yaşlı İntiharlarının Görünümü: İnternet Haber Kaynaklı Retrospektif Bir Analiz

Abstract

Amaç: İntihar, yaşlı nüfusta önemli bir halk sağlığı sorunudur. Bu çalışmanın amacı, yaşlı intiharlarının (65+ yaş üstü) internet haber sitelerine yansıyan olgular üzerinden incelenmesidir. Yöntem: Bu tanımlayıcı çalışmada, yaşlı intiharı haberleri Oxford Üniversitesi Reuters Enstitüsü 2024 Dijital Haber Raporunda Türkiye’de en fazla ziyaretçisi olan haber kaynaklarından televizyonlar dışlanarak kalan ilk 5 içerisindeki internet haber sitelerinde (Sondakika.com, Sözcü Online, Haberler.com, Ensonhaber.com, Haberturk.com) Aralık 2024’ten itibaren geriye dönük son 10 yıl retrospektif olarak incelenmiştir. Taramalar uygun anahtar sözcükler kullanılarak yapılmıştır. Bu tanımlayıcı çalışmada, elde edilen verilerin sistematik bir biçimde çözümlenmesi, kategorize edilmesi ve yorumlanması amacıyla nitel içerik analizi tekniği kullanılmıştır. Yaşlı intiharı haberleri içerisinden yabancı kaynaklı 6 özgün haber çalışma kapsamına dâhil edilmemiştir. Bulgular: Çalışma sonucunda 337 yaşlı intiharı haberinden kendi kaynağında veya başka kaynaklarda tekrar eden 176 haber dışlanarak 161 özgün habere ulaşılmış; iki haberin çift intihar içermesi ile analiz toplam 163 birey üzerinden gerçekleştirilmiştir. Yaşlı intiharlarının 122’si erkekler, 41’i kadınlar tarafından gerçekleştirilmiştir. En yüksek intihar oranı 65-74 yaş grubunda (n=70) saptanmıştır, bunu 75-84 (n=67) ve 85 yaş ve üzeri (n=26) izlemiştir. En sık tercih edilen intihar yöntemi ası olup bunu ateşli silah kullanımı, yüksekten atlama takip etmiştir. İntihar nedenlerinin önemli bir kısmı belirlenememiştir. Sonuç: Bu çalışma, Türkiye’de yaşlı intiharlarına ilişkin internet haberlerine dayalı güncel ve kapsamlı tanımlayıcı veriler sunmaktadır

Bu çalışma, kamuya açık internet haber sitelerinde yer alan ve kişisel tanımlayıcı bilgi içermeyen veriler kullanılarak yürütülmüştür. Çalışma kapsamında bireylerle doğrudan temas kurulmamış, herhangi bir müdahalede bulunulmamış ve özel nitelikli kişisel veri işlenmemiştir. Bu nedenle çalışma için etik kurul onayı gerekmemektedir. Ayrıca bu çalışma, Helsinki Bildirgesi ilkelerine uygun olarak yürütülmüştür.

Suicide Among Older Adults in Türkiye: A Retrospective Analysis Based on Internet News Sources

Abstract

Objective: Suicide is a significant public health issue among the elderly population. This study aimed to examine elderly suicide cases (aged 65+) through their reflection on internet news platforms. Methodology: In this descriptive study, elderly suicide news reports were retrospectively analyzed over a ten-year period leading back from December 2024. The analysis focused on the top five online news portals in Türkiye, as identified by the Oxford University Reuters Institute 2024 Digital News Report, excluding television outlets (Sondakika.com, Sözcü Online, Haberler.com, Ensonhaber.com, and Haberturk.com). Searches were conducted using specific keywords related to elderly suicide. Qualitative content analysis was used to systematically categorize and interpret the findings within this descriptive framework. Six foreign-sourced reports were excluded from the scope. Findings: From an initial 337 reports, 176 duplicates were removed, resulting in 161 unique reports; the analysis was performed on 163 individuals. Findings revealed that 122 suicides were committed by males and 41 by females. The highest frequency was observed in the 65-74 age group (n=70), followed by 75-84 (n=67) and 85+ (n=26). Hanging was the most common method, while firearms and jumping from heights were other prevalent methods. Most motives remained unidentified in the news content. Conclusion: This study provides current and comprehensive descriptive data on elderly suicides in Türkiye based on internet news.
