OLD - TURKISH CELEBRATION OF SPRING (HIDRELLEZ) AND HEALTH / ILNESS AT THE ANATOLIA

Abstract

Hıdrellez, is generally welcoming ceremony of spring in Anatolia and also known as a day on which the two prophets Hızır (Deus ex Machina) and Elijah meet once a year according to the people’s belief. And again generally ceremonies and applications for this day start on May 5th, continue to the night of May 6th. Connected with the cult of Hızır and Elijah, at the most part of the traditional applications which are realized on Hıdrellez, green plants, trees and water designs are being used very frequently and this case comes in front of us very often at the applications about the health / illness. For staying healthy during the whole year, rolling over the grass, taking bath with the water in which the flowers that are collected from the countryside have been put; for recovering from illness hanging the cloth pieces over the rose branches, jumping over the fire are the some of the applications that happen. On the other hand, there is a health / illness application about the Hıdrellez not to work on that day otherwise it can be harmful for the health. Explaining these applications about the subject is generally possible with ancestral, religional / magical beliefs connected with water and tree cult. *Main resource of the mentioned study is the “Compiling the Hıdrellez Tradition in Turkey Project” which is started by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, General Directorate of Research and Training, on 1989 and compiling forms are edited together with my dear wife, Folklorist, Meltem Cingöz Santur, who I have lost on November 8th, 2010 and who has attended to the “Lokman Hekim History of Medicine and Folkloric Medicine Days” with a proclamation which were held on 1999, 2003, 2005. (1) On this opportunity, I remember her with respect and love again. 1CİNGÖZ, Meltem E., Alparslan Santur: An Atlas Assay about Some Beliefs and Traditions which are Applied on Hıdrellez in Turkey, Researches of Turkish Popular Culture 1993, Ankara 1993, 05-23.
