Some Observations on Medicine with the Samples from Ayintab Sheria Court Registers

Abstract

Günümüzün Gaziantep’i, Osmanlı’nın Ayıntab’ıdır, ama aynı zamanda çok daha öncesinin de yerleşimlerinden birisidir. Antep’in sosyal-siyasal tarihine dair çalışmalar, onun zaman çizgisi üzerinde Medler-Persler, Hititler, Romalılar, Komagene Krallığı ve Bizans dönemlerinde de önemli bir merkez olduğunu göstermektedir. Buradan hareketle kentin, tıp ve sağlık alanına ait durumunun saptanması da son derece verimli bir coğrafi ve kültürel merkezin bir başka boyuttaki gelişmişliğini vurgulayacaktır. Bilindiği gibi, tarih çalışmalarının birincil kaynaklara dayanarak gerçekleştirilmesi metodolojik açıdan tarih bilgisinin altyapısını oluşturmakta değerli bir adımdır. Bu açıdan kentin şer’i mahkeme sicil örnekleri kapsamlı fikir verebilecek birincil kaynaklardır. Ayıntab mahkemesinin yeri ve işlevi hakkında, Osmanlı döneminin hukuk yapısı içerisinde önemli bir kurum olarak ayrıntılı bir biçimde çalışılmış ve üzerinde çok sayıda eserler verilmiş bulunmaktadır. Bu sunuşta hekim sorumluluğu ve tıbbın işleyişi hakkında fikir verecek dört adet Ayıntab şer’i mahkeme sicil örneği üzerinde durulacaktır. Böylece, Gaziantep coğrafyasında tıp ve hekimlik uygulamalarına ait XVI.-XVIII. yüzyıllardan örneklerle o dönemin meslek uygulamasına ilişkin sınırlı bir durum saptaması yapmak amaçlanmaktadır

Ayıntab Şer’i Mahkeme Sicillerinden Örneklerle Tıp ve Hekimlik Üzerine Gözlemler

Abstract

Nowadays Gaziantep has been named as Ayıntab during the Ottoman era, the all historical documents and the previous works from the fields of history, sociology, archeology etc shown this city had been an important center all the time span, namely Med- Persian era, Hittites, Roman Empire, Comagenes, Byzantium. For that reason, to see Ayıntab as a geographical, commercial and cultural habitation area in the Seljuk and Ottoman periods does not surprise us. The similar richness of experiences and reflections on medicine and healthcare also have been emphasized another dimension of this city’s historical story. As generally accepted, using primary sources is a valuable methodological way on the historical studies. From this point of view, Ayıntab Sheria Court Registers seems as one of important sources. This Court has been represented own period’s law system and finding a lot of previous detailed works in the academic literature about Ayıntab Sheria Court is also possible. Four different register samples relevant to physician responsibility and medical practice have been introduced in this presentation. On this way, to reach at least restricted information about daily practice of medicine in Ayıntab in 16th and 18th centuries has been aimed
