Saffron from Past to Present: Traveling in the History of Pharmacy

Abstract

Hititler döneminden beri Anadolu’da bilinen, ilaç, baharat ve boyar madde olarak kullanılmış olan
safran, Crocus sativus (Iridaceae) türünün kurutulmuş stigmalarından oluşur. Mitolojide Hermes
Krokus’a aşıktır, kıskançlık nedeniyle onu Crocus çiçeğine dönüştürür ve yarasından akan kanın
toprağa değdiği yerde büyüyen çiçeğe ismini verir. Drog, Dioscorides’in “Materia Medica”sında
ve İbn-i Sina’nın “el-Kanun fi’t-Tıbb” adlı eserinde kayıtlıdır. Anadolu’da halk arasında sinir sistemi
uyarıcısı, iştah açıcı ve adet söktürücü olarak kullanılmıştır.
Bu çalışmada birçok ülkenin mutfağında yer alan safranın eczacılık tarihindeki rolü incelenecektir

Abstract

Saffron which is used as medicine, spice and dye, known since the time of the Hittites in Anatolia, and consists of dried stigma of Crocus sativus (Iridaceae) species. In mythology, Hermes was in love with Krokus, out of jealousy transformed Krokus into the flower Crocus, gave its name to the growing flowers where the blood from its wound touches the ground. The drug is recorded in Dioscorides’ "Materia Medica" and Ibn Sina’s "el-Kanun fi’t-Tıbb". It has been used among the people of Anatolia as nervous system stimulant, appetizer and as an emmenagogue. In this study, the role of saffron that involved in the gastronomy of many countries, will be analyzed in the history of pharmacy.
