İslam Uygarlığı Çağı’nda veteriner hekimliğinin durumuna ilişkin önemli kaynak niteliğindeki baytarnameler ağırlıklı olarak, at yetiştiriciliği, hastalıkları ve bunların tedavileri konularını içermektedir. 9. yy’da ilk örneklerine rastlanan Arapça baytarnamelerin Osmanlıca’ya tercüme edilmesine 14.yy’dan itibaren başlandığı bilinmektedir. Bu eserler, dönemin veteriner hekimliği uygulamaları hakkında da bilgiler içermesi bakımından veteriner hekimliği ve bilim tarihi açısından da ayrı bir önem taşımaktadır. Bu uygulamalar arasında günümüzde kronik bazı vakalarda da kullanılan koterizasyon (dağlama, key) cerrahi tedavi yöntemlerinden biri olarak yer almaktadır.Çalışmada, 1479’da yazıldığı bilinen at ile ilgili bir baytarname (Tercüme-i Baytarname) ve bu baytarnamenin 1802’de yazılan bir kopyası incelendi. Günümüz Türkçe’sine tercüme edilen on bölümlük eserde yer alan hastalıklardan (8. Bölüm) tedavisinde (9 - 10. Bölüm) koterizasyon yöntemi uygulananlar belirlendi. Konu, tarihsel süreçte değerlendirilip baytarname konusunda daha önce yapılmış çalışmalar ve günümüz bilgileri ile tartışılarak bilim ve veteriner hekimliği tarihine katkı sağlanması amaçlandı
Abstract Baitarnames as the important source of veterinary medicine in Islam Civilization Era includegenerally information about of the horsebreeding, its diseases and treatments, as well. Arabic baitarnames that encountered in the first instances in 9th century were translated to Ottoman language in 14th century. These works have a special importance for the history of veterinary medicine and science because of also contain information about the application for veterinary medicine in their period. One of these applications is cauterization (daglama, key) and it is also used today in some chronic cases as one of the methods of surgical treatment. In the study investigated a baitarname written in 1479 (Tercüme-i Baytarname) and its copy that was written in 1802. The baitarname included 10 chapters was translated into Turkish language and determined diseases (Chapter 8) that applied cauterization method in their treatment (Chapter 9 and 10). The topic was evaluated in the historical process and was aimed to contribute to the history of science and veterinary medicine with discussed the earlier studies on baitarnames and present data. With this study, it was determined that the cauterization method still preserves the validity of the current scientific and folkloric practices in general applied in the treatment of diseases of the nerves and muscles in the 15th century and the treatments form detailed and used different form (square and patterned) and structure (iron and copper) materials for cauterization. In parallel with other studies on topic, it can be said that the method was used for thousands of years in chronic diseases and diseases which are difficult to treat and it’s usually applied correctly and is being used now in treatment of similar diseases. It could be affirm that the baitarname that examined with this study has importance of being the historical source for the use of the cauterization method in treatment in 15th century,as well as it should be considered in terms of today's alternative therapy which has importance in alternative medicine.
