Abstract

This review examines Nidesh Lawtoo's Homo Mimeticus: A New Theory of Imitation (2022), a transdisciplinary study positioning mimesis as foundational to human nature. Part of an ERC-funded project, the book traces mimesis genealogically from Plato through Nietzsche to neuroscience, structured in three parts covering genealogies, aesthetics, and politics. The review lauds Lawtoo's conceptual innovations, particularly his reframing of Plato's concerns with “patho-logy” and by making connections between mimetic theory and mirror neurons. Applications range from postcolonial literature to viral mimesis during COVID-19 pandemic. However, significant criticisms emerge: dense philosophical prose creates accessibility barriers, while repetitive genealogical recapitulations burden readability. Most critically, the review notes the work's "unabashed Eurocentrism," and its failure to recognize non-Western traditions despite universal claims about human condition. While recognizing Homo Mimeticus as a valuable contribution to mimetic theory, the review calls for cross-cultural openness when addressing supposedly universal human attributes. The review concludes by expressing eagerness towards the project’s evolution toward posthuman conditions and generative AI.
