At the age of thirty-one, Seymour Glass ends his life with his own gun while on vacation in Miami with his wife Muriel, and the hero’s suicide still draws the reader’s attention. This article aims to understand the phenomenon of voluntary death by dealing with the suicide of Seymour Glass, the genius of the fictional Glass family, with the psychological autopsy technique. The psychological autopsy technique is used to illuminate cases characterized as suicide or suspicious death and aims to determine the motivation that drives the individual to commit suicide in the background.
Seymour Glass, Amerikalı yazar J. D. Salinger’ın Dokuz Öykü (1953), Yükseltin Tavan Kirişini Ustalar: Seymour Bir Giriş (1955) ve Franny ve Zooey (1961) başlıklı kitaplarında yer alan bir anti-kahramandır. Seymour Glass, henüz otuz bir yaşındayken karısı Muriel’le çıktığı Miami tatilinde kendisine ait silahla hayatına son verir ve kahramanın intiharı okurun ilgisini çekmeye hâlâ devam eder. Bu yazı, kurgusal Glass ailesinin dâhi çocuğu Seymour Glass’ın intiharını psikolojik otopsi tekniğiyle ele alarak istemli ölüm olayının anlaşılmasını amaçlamaktadır. Psikolojik otopsi tekniği, intihar veya şüpheli ölüm olarak nitelendirilen olguların aydınlatılmasında kullanılmakta ve arka planda bireyi intihara sürükleyen motivasyonun belirlenmesini hedeflemektedir.
