Abstract

Vatan, insanın seçip değiştirebileceği bir ikamet yeri değildir. Dahası insan vatanını unutamaz da... Schelling’in meşhur tabirini kullanacak olursak, o ezelî [Unvordenklich] bir şeydir. Bu nedenle, sürgündeki yaşama, kişinin dışlandığını bildiği vatanına dair düşünceler, -dolayısıyla geri dönüş [Rückkehr] söz konusu olmasa bile geri dönüş düşünceleri de- gayriihtiyari eşlik eder. Vatan unutulmazlığını sürdürür. Mobilizasyonun giderek arttığı günümüz dünyasında vatan, hareketliliğin çok sınırlı olduğu eski zamanlardakiyle aynı anlamı taşımaz artık. O dönemlerde kişinin menedildiği vatanına sürgünden dönmeyi düşünmesi de aynı sebeple, tekrar tekrar maruz kaldığı bir dışlanmışlık gibi kendini gösterirdi. Bu andan itibaren her sürgün ağırdır ve sürgünün kaldırılacağı, kişinin vatanına dönebileceği umudu da her zaman canlıdır. Romalı şair Ovidius’un Karadeniz’deki sürgününde yaktığı ağıtlar bugün dahi insanlığın kalbinde çınlar.

Homeland and Language

Abstract

Homeland is not merely a place of residence that one can choose and change. Nor can one forget the homeland. It is, to use a famous expression by Schelling, something primordial (something beyond conception). Thus, life in exile must be accompanied by the thought of the homeland from which one knows oneself to be excluded—and with it, the thought of return, even if any actual return is out of the question. The homeland remains unforgettable. In our world, characterized by ever-increasing mobility, homeland is no longer the same as it was in times of greater rootedness. Back then, the idea of returning from exile to the homeland that was denied to one was something one suffered as a constant, ever-renewed exclusion. Every exile is difficult, and so the hope always lives on that the banishment will be lifted and that one may return home. Thus, the lamentations sung by the Roman poet Ovid from his place of exile on the Black Sea still move people’s hearts today.
