An Analysis on Fayli Kurds Living in Iraq

Abstract

This study examines the socio-political experiences of the Fayli Kurds in Iraq, with a particular focus on their forced migrations during the 20th century. The primary research question explores: How have the social and political conditions of the Fayli Kurds evolved since the establishment of the Iraqi state, and what socio-political factors have driven their forced migrations during this period? Through an extensive review of the available literature and analysis of historical and contemporary data, this study provides a comprehensive overview of the Fayli Kurds’ historical, social, and political realities. Despite the limited academic attention given to this ethnic and religious minority, the findings reveal systemic discrimination and marginalization faced by the Fayli Kurds, depriving them of equal citizenship rights since Iraq’s founding. These challenges were compounded by mass displacements, particularly under the Ba’ath regime, when many Fayli Kurds were exiled to Iran. Post-2003, following the fall of the Ba’ath Party, some displaced Fayli Kurds returned to Iraq. However, their primary demand remains the establishment of equal citizenship, with recognition of their ethnic and religious identities by both the Iraqi central government and the Kurdish Regional Government.
