Evaluation of the movie “Little Women” through structural family therapy

Abstract

The purpose of the present article is to examine the Little Women movie produced in 2019, which is an adaptation of the book of the same name, based on the basic theories and concepts of structural family therapy. Current article examines the projections of concepts such as boundaries, family systems, strength, coalition, balance, roles, hierarchical relationships and large family dynamics used by structural family therapy in the Little Women movie. The documentary analysis method was used in the research. The family in the film was evaluated in terms of functional and dysfunctional families, families with children with illnesses, subsystems in the family and individualization efforts of family members. In this context, 38 scenes thought to be related to the relevant concepts were examined. Initially, the theoretical framework within the scope of Minuchin's theory was drawn. Then, an evaluation was made between the selected scenes and the relevant concepts. This evaluation aimed to concretize and exemplify the concepts of structural family counseling theory. As a result of the evaluation, it was seen that this family, consisting of four sisters and two parents, experienced serious role confusion, members of the sibling subsystem occasionally assumed the role of parents and this caused power imbalances. As a result of the implicit rules set by the family, there are permeable boundaries between family members. Therefore family members prioritize the benefits of the family over their individuality, thus preventing them from building their individuality.

Yapısal aile danışmanlığı bağlamında “Küçük Kadınlar” filminin değerlendirilmesi

Abstract

Makalenin amacı aynı isimdeki kitaptan uyarlama olan 2019 yapımı Küçük Kadınlar filminin yapısal aile terapisine ait temel teori ve kavramlara dayalı olarak incelenmesidir. Makalede yapısal aile terapisinin kullandığı sınırlar, aile sistemleri, güç, koalisyon, denge, roller, hiyerarşik ilişkiler ve geniş aile dinamikleri gibi kavramların Küçük Kadınlar filminde yer alan izdüşümleri incelenmiştir. Araştırmada nitel bir araştırma yöntemi olan doküman analizi kullanılmıştır. Filme konu olan aile; fonksiyonel/fonksiyonel olmayan aileler, hastalık sahibi çocuğun olduğu aileler, ailede bulunan alt sistemler ve aile üyelerinin bireyselleşme çabaları bakımından değerlendirilmiştir. Temel kavramlarla ilişkili olduğu düşünülen 38 sahne ele alınmıştır. Öncelikle Minuchin’in teorisi kapsamında yer alan kuramsal çerçeve çizilmiştir. Sonrasında incelemeye tabi tutulan sahneler ve ilgili kavramlar arasında bir değerlendirme gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu değerlendirme ile yapısal aile danışmanlığı kuramına ait kavramların somutlaştırılması ve örneklendirilmesi hedeflenmiştir. Değerlendirme sonucunda dört kız kardeş ve iki ebeveynden oluşan bu ailenin önemli ölçüde rol karmaşası yaşadığı, kardeş alt sistemin üyelerinin ebeveyn rolü üstlendikleri ve bunun güç dengesizliklerine sebep olduğu görülmektedir. Ailenin örtük kuralı sonucu aile üyeleri arasında geçirgen sınırların varlığı söz konusudur. Tüm bunlar aile üyelerinin bireyselliklerinden ziyade ailenin faydalarını öncelemelerine ve bireyselliklerini inşa edememelerine sebep olmaktadır.
