Askıda Kalanlar: Oryantalizm ve Oksidentalizm Arasında Kültürlerarası Anlamın Zorluğu Üzerine

Abstract

Bu makale, göçmenlerin farklı kültürel bağlamlarda yaşadıkları epistemik kırılganlık ve “askıda kalma” durumunu ele almaktadır. Göçmenler, ne tamamen geldikleri kültüre ne de yeni toplumlarına ait olamadıkları bir ara alanda bulunur; bu durum kimlik, bilgi ve yorumlama süreçlerinde kırılganlığa yol açar. Makale, Bourdieu’nün habitus, Geertz’in kalın betimleme, Hall’un kültürel temsil, Bhabha’nın üçüncü mekân ve Turner’ın eşik mekânı kavramları üzerinden, kültürlerarası anlamın inşasında bağlam, gündelik pratikler ve çoklu perspektifin önemini tartışmaktadır. Ayrıca, oryantalizm ve oksidentalizm ekseninde, göçmen yorumlarının duygusal ve epistemik temelleri analiz edilmekte; dilsel yeterlilik, kavramsal çerçeve ve kültürel farkındalığın yorumları nasıl etkilediği gösterilmektedir. Makale, göçmen deneyimini hem kültürel hem de felsefi boyutuyla değerlendirerek, kültürlerarası anlayış literatürüne kavramsal bir katkı sunmaktadır.

Suspended in Between: The Challenge of Intercultural Meaning Between Orientalism and Occidentalism

Abstract

This article examines the epistemic vulnerability and “suspended” position experienced by migrants navigating multiple cultural contexts. Migrants often exist in an intermediate space, belonging neither fully to their origin culture nor to the host society, which generates cognitive and interpretive fragility. Drawing on Bourdieu’s habitus, Geertz’s thick description, Hall’s cultural representation, Bhabha’s third space, and Turner’s liminality, the study highlights the importance of context, everyday practices, and multiple perspectives in constructing intercultural meaning. Additionally, through the lens of Orientalism and Occidentalism, it analyzes how emotional and epistemic factors shape migrant interpretations, emphasizing the roles of language proficiency, conceptual frameworks, and cultural awareness. By addressing migration from both cultural and philosophical perspectives, the article offers a conceptual contribution to the literature on intercultural understanding.
