Özel Eğitim Alanında Yaşam Öyküsü Araştırmaları: Kavramsal, Metodolojik ve Sistematik Bir İnceleme/ Life Story Research in Special Education: A Conceptual, Methodological, and Systematic Review

Abstract

Anlatı araştırmalarının bir türü olan yaşam öyküsü araştırmaları bireylerin yaşantılarına ilişkin deneyimlerin hikâye formunda ifade edilmesine olanak tanıyan ve bu deneyimlerin sosyal, kültürel, ekonomik ve tarihsel bağlamlarla derinlemesine incelenmesini sağlayan nitel bir veri toplama tekniğidir. Özel eğitim alanında anlatı araştırmalarına yönelik ilgi giderek artmasına karşın, yaşam öyküsü araştırmaları hem sayıca sınırlı kalmakta hem de çoğu zaman anlatı, biyografi ya da otobiyografi gibi diğer anlatı yaklaşımlarıyla kavramsal olarak karıştırılmaktadır. Bu çalışma, yaşam öyküsü araştırmalarının kavramsal ve metodolojik temellerini incelemeyi ve özel eğitim alanında nasıl uygulandığını ortaya koyarak özel eğitim alanında çalışan araştırmacılara kuramsal ve uygulamalı katkı sunmayı amaçlamaktadır. Bu amaç doğrultusunda, 2015–2025 yılları arasında ERIC ve SCOPUS veri tabanlarında özel eğitim alanında yayımlanan yaşam öyküsü araştırmaları belirlenen ölçütler çerçevesinde sistematik olarak taranmış ve betimsel içerik analizi yöntemiyle değerlendirilmiştir. Bulgular özel eğitim alanında yaşam öyküsü araştırmalarının oldukça sınırlı sayıda gerçekleştirildiğini ve bu çalışmaların yöntemsel uygulama süreçlerinde özgün güçlükler barındırdığını göstermekte, ancak söz konusu yaklaşımın özel eğitim ve engellilik çalışmalarına önemli katkılar sunma potansiyeline sahip olduğunu ortaya koymaktadır. Bu çalışma, yaşam öyküsü araştırmalarının özel eğitim alanında nasıl uygulanabileceğini ortaya koyarak, bu alandaki sınırlı kaynak ve uygulama örneklerine katkı sunmakta; böylece özel gereksinimli bireylerin yaşam deneyimlerinin derinlemesine anlaşılmasına yönelik gelecek araştırmalara kuramsal ve uygulamalı bir zemin oluşturmaktadır.

Abstract

Life story research, a type of narrative inquiry, is a qualitative data collection method that allows individuals to express their experiences in the form of stories and enables these experiences to be examined in depth within social, cultural, economic, and historical contexts. Although interest in narrative research in the field of special education has been steadily increasing, life story research remains relatively limited in number and is often conceptually conflated with other narrative approaches such as biography or autobiography. This study aims to examine the conceptual and methodological foundations of life story research and to demonstrate how it is applied in the field of special education, thereby providing theoretical and practical contributions to researchers working in this area. To this end, life story studies published between 2015 and 2025 in the ERIC and SCOPUS databases within the field of special education were systematically screened according to predefined criteria and evaluated using descriptive content analysis. The findings indicate that life story research in special education is still quite limited and presents unique methodological challenges, yet this approach holds significant potential for contributing to research on special education and disability. By illustrating how life story research can be implemented in special education, this study contributes to the limited sources and practical examples in the field, thereby providing a theoretical and practical foundation for future research aimed at understanding the life experiences of individuals with special needs in depth.
