In Turkey, people in general believe that having children is necessary for the satisfaction with one’s life and will bring joy to them. However, many studies on this issue conducted by using European and the US data suggests that having children does not always increase happiness. This study investigates the relationship between having children and happiness in Turkey. For this purpose, 2014 Turkey Survey by Social Sciences University of Ankara which is based on a representative sample of Turkey is used. According to the findings of this research, being a parent is positively related to happiness in Turkey, however, this relationship is not linear. In other words, each additional child does not have the same contribution on parents’ happiness. Especially, having two children is positively associated with happiness. While fatherhood is positively associated with happiness, compared to fatherhood, motherhood is negatively associated with happiness.
