A LITERAURE REVIEW ON TEACHING MATHEMATICS TO HEARING-IMPAIRED STUDENTS
Abstract
There are a number of studies which revealed that hearing-impaired students have lower academic performance than their hearing peers do. Learning mathematics is one of the areas in which hearing-impaired students experience academic difficulties. Studies have identified the causes of difficulties experienced hearing-impaired students: inadequacies of early learning experiences, delayed language, the nature of the mathematical language, difficulties in reading comprehension, mathematics teachers' not completing the mathematics curriculum due to the language focused instructions and not providing efficient opportunities to solve word mathematical problems. However, studies have shown that hearing-impaired children can learn mathematics similarly to their peers, yet this learning process happen delayed. Like hearing children, hearing impaired children have to learn mathematics in order to become successful, effective and independent individuals in the society. In this literature review the related research results of teaching mathematics to hearing impaired students and the important aspects of hearing-impaired students' learning mathematics are discussed.
