AN EXAMINATION OF PRE-SERVICE TEACHERS’ LEVEL OF UNDERSTANDING OF SCALAR AND VECTOR QUANTITIES
Abstract
The purpose of the study is to examine the level of understanding of scalar and vector quantities taught in the general physics course which are compulsory in the second grade for the pre-service teachers studying in the third grade of the undergraduate program of primary education department. Total 87 pre-service teachers, 71 females and 16 males, participated in the study. The research data was obtained via an interview form consisting of three open-ended questions prepared by the researcher after receiving an expert’s opinion. What draws attention is that the pre-service teachers considered weight as vector quantity (33.3%) and scalar quantity (56.3%). Moreover, they considered potential difference (50.6%), velocity (31.0%) and distance (31.0%) as vector quantity. It can be stated that although the study group learned scalar and vector quantities both in high school and university, the pre-service teachers’ level of understanding of these concepts were not at a desired level. Interviews were carried out individually with 6 pre-service teachers chosen randomly out of 87 pre-service teachers who shared their views about scalar and vector quantities in writing. Considering the results of some quasi-experimental studies, it is considered that the use of writing to learn activities will be effective for teaching of scalar and vector quantities.
