War Narratives in the Works of Tacitus and the Roman Army According to These Narratives

Abstract

Theodor Mommsen once said that “Tacitus is the most non-military historian in a military age.” Although he is right when compared with other historians, such as Iulius Caesar, Polybios, Ammianus Marcellinus, who wrote about his own military experiences, Tacitus gave very useful information about the battles and wars in the lands of Germania and Britannia. In this study, we will try to convey how Tacitus wrote military issues. We will try to evaluate how the Romans and the tribes that the Romans described as “barbarians” fought, what kind of weapons they used, and how geographical conditions affected these wars, in the light of what Tacitus told us.

Tacitus’un Eserlerinde Savaş Anlatıları ve Bu Anlatılara Göre Roma Ordusu

Abstract

Theodor Mommsen, “Tacitus militarist bir çağda tarihçilerin en askeri deneyimi olmayanıdır.” demiştir. Mommsen’in bu cümlesinde, Iulius Caesar gibi, Polybios gibi, Ammianus Marcellinus gibi kendi askeri deneyimlerini yazan diğer tarih yazarlarıyla karşılaştırıldığında elbette haklılık payı vardır. Ancak Tacitus’un, Romalıların Germania ve Britannia topraklarında verdikleri mücadeleler ve savaşlar hakkında oldukça faydalı bilgiler aktardığını görürüz. Biz bu çalışmamızda Tacitus’un askeri meseleleri nasıl ele aldığını, Romalıların ve Romalıların “barbar” olarak niteledikleri kavimlerin nasıl savaştığını, nasıl silahlar kullandıklarını ve coğrafi koşulların bu savaşlara ne denli etki ettiğini, Tacitus’un bize aktardıklarının ışığında değerlendirmeye çalışacağız.
