HANDLING OF WEDDING CHEST BY TURKS AND ITS TRADITIONAL DECORATIONS

Abstract

The practice of collecting and keeping the objects as well as enabling them easily transportable, is a habit based on their nomadic period. The nomads used to keep their objects in light, easily collected and transportable bundles, saddle bags and chests. The Turks living in permanent settlement also used to wrap their valuable items, dresses, fabric products and dowry in bundles. Dowries were kept in embedded cabinets in ancient Turkish houses. The general use of the chest by Turks corresponds to 19th century in which the western type of living is adopted. The chest was easily adopted and even chest rooms were designed separately in the houses of reach people in
spite of the embedded cabinet tradition.
In the study, the chest which was the symbol of status in the dowry tradition of Turks has
been studied from type of handling, and decoration point of view. That study is important due to
transfer of traditional furniture types and inspiration for new designs.

TÜRKLERDE ÇEYİZ SANDIĞININ KULLANIMI VE GELENEKSEL SÜSLEMELERİ

Abstract

Eşyalarını kolay taşınabilir kılma, toplama ve saklama pratiği Türklerin göçerevlilikten
getirdikleri alışkanlıklarındandır. Göçerevliler, eşyalarını hafif, kolay toplanır ve taşınır bohçalarda,
hurçlarda, sandıklarda saklamışlardır. Yerleşik düzendeki Türkler de değerli eşya, giysi, dokuma
ürünlerini ve çeyizlerini bohçaya sararlardı. Çeyiz, eski Türk evlerindeki gömme dolapların içine
yerleştirilirdi. Sandığın Türklerde yaygın kullanımı, Batılı yaşam biçiminin yerleşmeye başladığı 19.
yüzyıla denk gelmektedir. Sandık kolayca benimsenmiş ve hatta gömme dolap geleneğine rağmen,
zengin evlerde ayrıca sandık odaları tasarlanmıştır.
Çalışmada Türklerin çeyiz geleneğinde statü simgesi olan sandık, kullanım şekli ve
süslemeleri açısından incelenmiştir. Çalışma, geleneksel Türk mobilya biçimlerinin aktarılması ve
yeni tasarımlara ilham vermesi açısından önem taşımaktadır.
