An Analysis of the Effects of Divorce on Children from a Parental Perspective

Abstract

Divorce is defined, in its simplest terms, as the termination of the marital union through legal means. When you examine this phenomenon, you realize that it is not merely a separation between spouses, but also a process of fundamental restructuring within the family system. When mutual love, respect, and trust are lost, divorce sometimes becomes an unavoidable necessity. The effects of parental divorce on children are not one-dimensional; when assessing this impact, you must consider the reasons for the divorce, the quality of communication between the parents, and the relationship each parent has with the child. It is known that the increasing number of divorces today negatively affects family members, especially children. Children's mental health, social skills, and academic achievement can be directly affected by this process. However, you should know that you should not attribute every negative situation experienced after divorce solely to the divorce; environmental conditions, personal characteristics, and parental attitudes play a decisive role in this process. Parents being good observers after divorce contributes to a healthier process. The aim of this study is to reveal the extent to which children are affected by the divorce process; to examine whether there is a deterioration in their mental health after divorce and, consequently, changes in their social skills and academic achievements. The research was conducted between August 1 and September 1, 2025, using qualitative research, case studies, and face-to-face interviews. A semi-structured questionnaire administered to divorced mothers and fathers was chosen as the data collection tool. The findings can be used to understand the effects of divorce on children's development and to raise awareness among parents, thereby contributing to raising healthy, self-confident, and responsible individuals.
