The Role of People of Book in Resistance of Heathens toward the Prophecy of Muhammad

Abstract

The People of Book was expecting that a prophet would appear soon in the near future and he would be someone among them-selves. However, since this expected prophet appeared among Arabs, they rejected his prophecy. And they made a kind of alliance with Aristocratic heathens, who wanted to maintain their social status, in resistance to prophecy of Muhammad. It seems clear that the Jews (People of Book) influenced heathen Arabs in both their rejection of Muhammad and their understanding the concept of prophecy.

Müşriklerin Hz. Muhammed’in Peygamberliğine Karşı Çıkmalarında Ehl-İ Kitab’ın Rolü

Abstract

Ehl-i Kitab, Hz. Muhammed’in peygamberliğinden önce, yakın gelecekte bir nebî gönderileceği beklentisindeydi. Ancak bu nebînin kendi aralarından olacağını ümit ediyorlardı. Beklenen nebî Arap-lardan gönderilince onlar, Hz. Muhammed’in peygamberliğini kabul etmediler. Toplumdaki konumlarını kaybetmek istemeyen Arap aristokratları da ona karşı çıkınca, her iki taraf ortak hareket edip Hz. Muhammed’in peygamberliğini inkâr ettiler. Gerek peygamberliği algılama gerekse ona itiraz etmede özellikle Yahudilerin Araplar üzerinde ciddi etkilerinin olduğu söylenebilir.
