Usage of the g Control Chart in Monitoring Rare Events: An Analysis of Earthquake Data

Abstract

Rare events are events that, although occurring infrequently, can have significant consequences and are often difficult to monitor using traditional statistical process control tools. Especially in processes with low event counts, frequent zero observations, and irregular event intervals, traditional control charts may have limited sensitivity. This study examines the geometric distribution-based g control chart for monitoring rare events and evaluates its applicability to earthquake data. In the application, earthquake data covering the 1995–2025 period for the provinces of Amasya, Çorum, and Tokat in the TR83 Level 2 Region were used, and earthquakes with magnitude Mx ≥ 4.0 were considered rare events. At the provincial level, g control charts were constructed using the observation intervals between events, and unusual changes in seismic activity were analysed. The findings showed that narrower control limits generated more frequent signals, whereas wider control limits produced fewer signals and a lower nominal in-control signalling probability. However, because no independent validation criterion was available, these signals were not directly classified as false alarms or as physically meaningful seismic anomalies. Overall, the study demonstrates that the g control chart can serve as a complementary statistical monitoring tool not only in industrial and service processes but also for rare, high-impact natural events such as earthquakes.
