Abstract

Sanayileşmeyle kentlerdeki istihdam imkânlarının artması ve cazibeli yaşam tarzı kırsal kesimden kente göçü teşvik etmektedir. Kentleşme olarak adlandırılan bu durum, ekonomik ve sosyo-kültürel yapıda değişiklikler yaratmaktadır. Bu çalışmanın amacı 1990-2020 dönemi verilerinden yararlanarak Türkiye’de kentleşmenin ekonomik büyüme ve kalkınma üzerindeki etkisinin incelenmesidir. Çalışmada öncelikle ARDL analizi uygulanarak kentleşme, ekonomik büyüme ve kalkınma arasındaki kısa ve uzun vadeli ilişkiler ele alınmış, ardından Toda-Yamamato nedensellik testiyle seriler arasında nedensellik olup olmadığı araştırılmıştır. Toda-Yamamato nedensellik testinden ulaşılan sonuçlara göre kentleşme, ekonomik büyüme ve kalkınmanın nedeni olarak tespit edilmiştir. ARDL hata düzeltme modelinden ulaşılan bulgular da seriler arasında uzun vadeli ilişkiye dair kanıtlar sunmaktadır.

Empirical Analysis of the Relationship between Urbanization, Economic Growth and Development for Turkey

Abstract

Increasing employment opportunities in cities with industrialization and attractive lifestyle encourages migration from rural areas to cities. This situation, which is called urbanization, creates changes in the economic and socio-cultural structure. The aim of this study is to examine the effect of urbanization on economic growth and development in Turkey by using the data of 1990-2020 period. In the study, first of all, short and long-term relationships between urbanization, economic growth and development were discussed by applying ARDL analysis, and then it was investigated whether there was causality between the series with the Toda-Yamato causality test. According to the results obtained from the Toda-Yamato causality test, urbanization has been identified as the cause of economic growth and development. Findings from the ARDL error correction model also provide evidence for a long-term relationship between series.
