Politics, Culture and Perception: Discourses Regarding Alevis on 7th June Elections in Turkey

Abstract

Alevis, being one of the significant religious groups in Turkey, and the problems regarding their rights and freedom of beliefs, have been intensely debated after 2000s and these disputes moved on to another phase in 2009 when Justice and Development Party (AK Part) took a new political step “Alevi Initiative”. Undoubtedly, it is thought that politics as a system and politicians as an authority are the highest position to discuss these problems and present solutions. In this regard, this study aims to analyse how political parties tackled the issues about Alevism, Bektashism and Alevis at their political campaigns on 7th June 2015 elections, how much political leaders mentioned their problems, and what solutions they presented for the socio-political problems of Alevis. To be able to answer these research questions, we widely applied discourse analysis. However also benefitted from content analysis where we needed. The rally speeches of the main political parties in Turkey Justice and Development Party (AK Party), Republican People’s Party (CHP), Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and People’s Democratic Party HDP) they delivered before the 7th June elections is the main universe of this study. Through examining the discourses about Alevism, Bektashism and Alevis during an election process, this study has tried to find out how politics and politicians has handled a religious minority group especially at sensitive times. The results suggest that, the Turkish political parties seem to avoid clearly handling the problems regarding Alawism but only talking about them through a very smooth way mostly in general terms.
