Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Financial Performance of Tourism and Transportation Enterprises

Abstract

A significant part of the world's population goes to different places temporarily or permanently from their place of residence for various reasons. This mobility causes an increase in demand for transportation and tourism enterprises. In addition, the increase in demand in these sectors results in intensification of competition. Increasing competition among enterprises necessitates the determination of enterprise performance and efficiency in order to create a competitive enterprise structure. Throughout history, the world has faced many difficult situations. These difficulties have emerged sometimes as war, sometimes as natural disasters and sometimes as epidemics. On December 1, 2019, the world faced a new infectious disease with the first case of Covid-19 in Wuhan, China. Transportation and tourism sectors are among the sectors most affected by Covid-19 due to the significant restrictions taken by countries. In the study, the activities of enterprises operating in the BIST tourism and transportation sectors were measured with the help of Data Envelope Analysis (DEA) and Tobin q ratio with financial statement data including the periods between the first quarter of 2019 and the third quarter of 2020. When the periods discussed are evaluated, it is not possible to talk about the negative impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on enterprise performance in terms of DEA analysis. According to the Tobin q ratio, it is possible to say that the Covid-19 pandemic has a negative impact on enterprise activities in the transportation and tourism sectors.

COVID 19 Pandemisinin Turizm ve Ulaştırma İşletmelerinin Finansal Performansına Etkisi

Abstract

Dünya nüfusunun önemli bir kısmı çeşitli nedenlerle ikamet ettikleri yerden geçici veya daimî bir süre için farklı yerlere gitmektedir. Bu hareketlilik, ulaştırma ve turizm işletmelerine olan talepte artışa neden olmaktadır. Bunun yanı sıra söz konusu sektörlerdeki talep artışı rekabetin de yoğunlaşmasıyla sonuçlanmaktadır. İşletmeler arasında rekabet artışı, rekabet edebilir bir işletme yapısının oluşturulması için işletme performans ve verimliliklerinin tespitini gerekli kılmaktadır.
Tarih boyunca dünya birçok zor durumla karşı karşıya kalmıştır. Bu zorluklar bazen savaş, bazen doğal felaketler ve bazen de salgın hastalıklar olarak ortaya çıkmıştır. 1 Aralık 2019 tarihinde Çin’in Wuhan kentinde ilk Covid-19 vakası ile karşılaşılmasıyla birlikte Dünya yeni bir bulaşıcı hastalıkla karşı karşıya kalmıştır. Ulaşım ve turizm sektörleri ülkeler tarafından alınan önemli kısıtlamalar sebebiyle Covid-19’dan en çok etkilenen sektörlerin başında yer almaktadır.
Çalışmada BIST turizm ve ulaştırma sektörlerinde faaliyet gösteren işletmelerin etkinlikleri 2019 birinci çeyrek ve 2020 üçüncü çeyrek arası dönemleri içeren mali tablo verileri kullanılarak Veri Zarflama Analizi (VZA) ve Tobin q oranı yardımıyla ölçülmüştür. Ele alınan dönemler değerlendirildiğinde VZA analizi açısından Covid-19 pandemisinin işletme performanslarına olumsuz etkisinden söz etmek mümkün değildir. Tobin q oranına göre Covid-19 pandemisinin ulaştırma ve turizm sektörlerinde işletme etkinlikleri üzerinde olumsuz etkisi olduğunu söylemek mümküdür.
