Osmanlı ve Erken Cumhuriyet Döneminde Okumayı Öğrenmek eserinde Fortna, 1880-1930 yılları arasına odaklanarak“okumanın ve okumayı öğrenmenin” tarihini içeren birincil kaynakları incelemeye çalışmış, bahsedilen dönemlerde okumanın konusu, özellikle de okumayı öğrenme
üzerinde durarak, okumaya yüklenen bu yeni anlamdan etkilenen küçük okurlara
odaklanmış ve alana katkı sağlamaya çalışmıştır. Giriş ve sonuç dahil toplamda toplamda yedi bölümden oluşan eser, bu alanda gelecek çalışmalara öncülük etmesi bakımından önemlidir.
