Two Different Quest Tales in Mythology: Voyages of Odysseus and Iason

Abstract

Quest theme is one of the most handled subjects in literature. From mythology to novels, from poetry to films, the quest theme is a frequently treated theme. Even though quests are analyzed differently in its core there is a spiritual search of the hero of the quest. This general overlook to the quest theme leads many theoreticians to seek this theme in texts. Joseph Campbell, the best known of those, in his work The Hero With A Thousand Faces by examining the quest theme, comes to the conclusion that it has existed since myths. He inserts the term of hero myth; monomyth and the nation that quest is a kind of search into world of literature. In this study, two important tales of mythology will be analyzed through Campbell’s theory and it will be proposed, however, that not every voyage has the form declared in the theory.

SÖYLENBİLİMDE İKİ FARKLI ARAYIŞ ÖYKÜSÜ: ODYSSEUS VE İASON’NUN YOLCULUKLARI

Abstract

Yolculuk edebi yazında en çok işlenen konuların başında gelir. Söylenbilimden romanlara, şiirlerden filmlere kadar, yolculuk teması her zaman işlenen bir temadır. Yolculuklar farklı şekillerde ele alınsa da özünde kahramanının manevi bir arayışı vardır. Bu sebeple bir çok kuramcı edebi eserlerdeki bu temanın incelenmesiyle uğraşır. Bunlardan biri, hatta bu konuda en çok tanınanı Joseph Campbell, eseri Kahramanın Sonsuz Yolculuğu’nda var olan yolculuk temasını ele alıp, bunun söylenlerden beri var olduğu savına varılır. Edebiyatın dağarcığına yolculuğun bir çeşit arayış olduğunu, kahraman söylenini, monomit kavramını ekler. Çalışmada da Campbell’ın bu kuralı söylenbilimin iki önemli yolculuk öyküsü ile örneklendirilerek incelenecektir. Fakat her yolculuğun bu kuramda iddia edildiği gibi olmadığı savı üzerinde durulacaktır.
