WOMAN AND FOOD CULTURE IN THE WOMAN WARRIOR

Abstract

Maxine Hong Kingston’s The Woman Warrior is divided into five stories. The first story is about a sexually abused woman who has not any rights to speak about it. In the second story the writer imagines herself as a Chinese woman warrior who is a legend. The next story is about writer’s mother's experiences in Chinese medical school. In the fourth story there are adventures of writer’s aunt after she comes to the United States from China hoping to meet her husband who is now married to another woman. In the final story Maxine Hong Kingston describes her childhood experiences in the California public school system, and her parents' attitudes towards her. In China food has a great importance in the culture. This study focuses on the roles of food and women indirectly in these five stories.

THE WOMAN WARRIOR’DA YEMEK KÜLTÜRÜ VE KADIN

Abstract

Maxine Hong Kingston’ın The Woman Warrior’ı beş ayrı öyküden oluşmaktadır. Feminist bir yazar olarak bilinen Kingston, bu romanın her bir bölümünde farklı birer kadının öyküsünü ele alır. Yazar, ilk öyküde uğradığı cinsel istismara rağmen söz hakkı bulunmayan bir kadını, ikincisinde efsanevi bir kadın kahramanı kendi çocukluğuyla özdeşleştirerek anlatır. Üçüncüsünde yazarın annesinin Çin’deki bir tıp fakültesinde edindiği deneyimleri, dördüncü öyküde yazarın halasının uzun süreden beri Amerika’ya yerleşmiş ve başkasıyla evlenmiş olan kocasını tekrar görme ümidiyle Çin’den Amerika’ya geliş macerası ele alınıyor. Son olarak yazar Kaliforniya’da bir okuldaki deneyimlerini ve ebeveynlerinin ona yaklaşımlarını anlatıyor. Çin’de yiyecek kültürü, çok önemli bir yer tutar. Bu çalışma da söz konusu öykülerde ki yiyeceğin ve dolaylı olarak kadının rolü üzerinde duruluyor.
