La Destination D’ephese De Flaubert Dans Son Voyage En Orient

Abstract

The western world, beginning from tha 1st Crusades in 1095, continued their crusades to the eastern worldwith the scientific, economic, political and technical analysis of Louis XIV whom the French called "theSun King". Among the 19 th century writers, Nerval,Chateaubriand, Loti, Lamartine, Flaubert, Du Camp andmany others attempted to generate a source of inspiration for their writings through their observationsin the eastern countries. They made the Eastern culture known more closely by the westerners throughtheirtravel notes. Gustave Flaubert, the pioneer of aesthetical and realist novel, travelled to the remains ofEphesus, which had a population of 250.000 inhabitantsunder the Romans, as part of his travels to Egypt,Lebanon, Palestine, Rhodes, Turke, Greece andItaly together with his friend Maxime Du Camp between1849-1851, in order to comply with hisdoctor's advice and the trends of the time. Flaubert found spiritualpeace in his visit to themonument described y the Romans and Artemis as the Temple of Diana, regardeda one of theSeven Wonders of the World, the construction of which wasstarted by the Lydian King Kroisosandcompleted in 550 BC. Although Flaubert had not written much during his 18-month-journey to the eastit is understood that he returned home with considerable material for his noveels apart from the fact thathe was back in good health not to mention the loss of a little hair. In 1851, it was not coincidental that hebegan writing Madame Bovary, his immortal work, on his return from the East.
