A New Discovery in Central Lycia: The Günağı Church

Abstract

Our surveys on the Byzantine settlements aim to document the religious and civilian buildings in the region, to discuss dates and functions of the documented structures, to identify the road network interconnecting these settlements, and to identify the contribution of agricultural production to artistic media. In this context, the article's subject constitutes the Günağı Church, situated in the mountainous part of Demre district of Antalya. There is no detailed study about the church except the brief submitted by the epigraph continued research. First time in our survey, we make the drawings of the church, and mark its location on the map as well as small finds around the church are documented in detail with photos and drawings. The church was built in "three-aisled basilica" scheme which is very common in the Lycia. The church, which was between the two villages shows the characteristics of a village church rather than a monastery. There are narthex and atrium at the west of the church, and at south remains of a burial chapel. Besides the church displays many of specific features in this area, some of the features are rare for this region. The most remarkable feature of the church is the quality and variety of ornaments. A large number of architecture and liturgical function stone work with decorated surfaces has been documented around the church. The architecture of the church and when stone artifacts in the church examined in terms of motifs, techniques and regulation appears that the church was built in the 5th century. It was made some of the architectural arrangement in the northern apse and added the wall paintings when a repair performed in the 11th-12th centuries.
