Purification of Nafs (the Soul) in “Risaletun Nushiyye” and “Vagz-ı Azat”

Abstract

Risaletun Nushiyye by Yunus Emre is a masnavi based on one’s attempt to deal with his inner bad sides in order to overcome his nafs (the soul). In this work of art, the ways to be a perfect human being through one’s struggle with his nafs in this temporary world, which is an exam place for mankind, are discussed. Another work of art namely “Vagz-ı Azat” by Dövletmemmet Azadı has the characteristics of a sermon in poetic form. In this work, Azadı stated his ideas on social, political, religious, economical matters and so on. Another issue highly emphasized by Azadı is purification of nafs.In the study, the notion of “nafs” that has a crucial role in one’s spiritual maturity and the issue of purification of nafs were presented with examples from both of the works comparatively. This review on the poets who lived in different places and time periods also aims to demonstrate the shared values and common expressions and phrases in the literature of Turkish world.
