THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN SELF-ESTEEM AND STIGMA TENDENCIES IN UNIVERSITY STUDENTS

Abstract

Investigating and explaining the etiology of the relationship between those who stigmatize and those who are stigmatized as well as the cultural and social output created within the society has been the subject of many social sciences. Examination of self-esteem has a sound role in the studies of stigma phenemenon since it is considered both as a cause and result of stigmatization. The purpose of this study is to determine the relationship between self esteem and stigmatization tendencies of undergraduate students enrolled in social work departments. This study, conducted with a total of 299 students in a foundation and a state university, was carried out using the relational screening model of the causal comparison type of the quantitative research design. According to the results of the research that students enrolled in foundation universities have more tendency to stigmatize. There was no significant association between male students and female students as in the general literature on self-esteem. However, results show that men tend to stigmatize more than women. The relationship between stigma tendency and self esteem was examined using the Pearson Product-Moment Correlation Coefficient and it was seen that there was a small positive and statistically insignificant relationship between the two variables.
