Year 2021, Issue: 44, 285 - 314, 23.05.2021
https://doi.org/10.30794/pausbed.784533

Abstract

AN EXAMPLE of FOREIGN REMAKES of SOUTH KOREAN DRAMAS: TRANSCULTURAL ANALYSIS of WHAT HAPPENS to MY FAMILY? and BABA CANDIR

Year 2021, Issue: 44, 285 - 314, 23.05.2021
https://doi.org/10.30794/pausbed.784533

Abstract

With the influence of cultural globalization, cooperation in television sector is becoming increasingly widespread worldwide. One example of such cooperation is taking place in the form of transcultural remakes of drama series. The purpose of this study conducted in this context is to analyze the South Korean drama What Happens to My Family? and its Turkish remake Baba Candır within the framework of cultural adaptations by exhibiting the similarities and differences of the two dramas, thus to question how the localization was achieved. For this reason, comparative transcultural analysis was performed in the study. Through this study it was observed that the elements of the original text that centers around the family institution and relations between family members such as the theme, characters and the plot is retained in the adapted text as well. However, by making additions to the adapted text, the aspects of comedy were enhanced and the duration of the episodes was extended. The main conflict element of the original text, the lawsuit between the father and his children, was marjinalized in the adapted text, as for the elements that were demonstrated in the original text such as the hierarchy, authority and formality within the family and in workspace was diminished. Elements regarding the food in drink culture were significantly altered. The approach towards the representation of the gender roles, preserving and retaining the family remained the same in both dramas.
