İnmemiş testis antik çağlardan beri bilinen bir hastalıktır. İnmemiş testis ya da “kriptorşidizm” terimi Yunanca “kryptos” [saklı, gizli] ve “orchis” [testis] kelimelerinden türetme skrotumda yer almayan testis ya da testisler için kullanılır.
