Resilience and Well-Being Levels in Patients Diagnosed with Cancer and Influencing Factors
Abstract
Objective: The aim of this study is to determine the levels of resilience and well-being in patients diagnosed with cancer, and the factors influencing these levels. Method: This study has a cross-sectional, descriptive and correlational quantitative research design. It was conducted with 360 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria along with a diagnosis of cancer. Data were collected using the “Individual Descriptive Characteristics Form,” the “Resilience Scale,” and the “Psychological Well-being Scale.” Results: The mean well-being score of the patients was 47.83±7.32, and the mean resilience scale score was 191.97±26.47. Patients who had a university degree or higher, were single, lived in the city center, and perceived themselves as having a support system had higher resilience. Patients who were employed and perceived themselves as having a good economic situation had higher psychological well-being and resilience. A weak and negative correlation was found between the time to diagnosis and both psychological well-being (r:-.167) and resilience (r: -.141). A significant, positive and strong correlation was found between the patients' resilience levels and their well-being levels (r: .610). Conclusion: Patients showed high levels of resilience and well-being. Resilience and well-being have a strong, positive impact on one another. The time taken to receive a diagnosis has a weak, negative impact on both resilience and well-being.
