Mısır’ın Doğu Çölünden Roma Ordu İdaresi hakkında yeni Belgeler: Didymoi Karakolu’ndan Ostrakonlar

Abstract

Sina Yarımadası’nda yolları gözetlemek ve bölgenin emniyetini sağlamak amacıyla Koptos’tan Bere­nike’ye uzanan güzergâh üzerinde kurulan Didymoi karakolunda İ.S. 2. ve 3. yy.a ait birçok ostrakon ele geçmiştir. Bu karakolun (praesidium) 174 yıllık idari tarihine ışık tutan toplam 465 adet yazılı ostra­kon kısa bir süre önce Hélène Cuvigny tarafından yayımlanmıştır. Stauner makalesinde bu ostra­kon­ların Roma ordusunun idari yapısına dair ne tür yeni bilgiler sunduğunu sorarak Cuvigny’nin kor­pu­sun­dan seçtiği bazı belgeleri ayrıntılarıyla incelemektedir. Seçilen ostrakonlar karakolun haber alma sistemi, erzak temini, sivillere sunulan geçiş belgeleri, karakolda görev yapan askerlerin okuma-yazma oranı ve mektup yazma alışkanlıkları ve de fuhuş ile ilgilidir. Belgelerden, bu çöl bölgesinde zor şart­lar­da görev yapan askerlerin ulaşım, erzak ve cinsel eğlence konularındaki taleplerine karşı ordu otorite­le­ri­nin belli oranda esneklik gösterdikleri anlaşılmaktadır.

New Documents from the Roman Military Administration in Egypt’s Eastern Desert: the Ostraca from the Praesidium of Didymoi

Abstract

The ostraca from Didymoi, recently published by Hélène Cuvigny, offer a host of new documents from the Roman military administration, spanning a period of some 174 years. In this article I take a closer look at a selection of them, asking to what extent they corroborate, extend and/or modify what we already know of the Roman army administration and its documentary procedures. The subjects dealt with include postal service procedures, the granting of transfers and commeatus, literacy and letter-writing as well as prostitution. The documents reveal, amongst other things, a certain amount of flexibility on the part of military authorities in Egypt’s Eastern desert when it came to accommodating soldiers’ requests for transfers, commeatus and sexual entertainment.
