Paper-Becomings: A Surface Praxis in Post-1960 Architecture

Abstract

This study examines the intellectual, poetic, and speculative productions that emerged in architecture after 1960, opposing modernism’s construction-centered approach. Drawing on paper architecture, unbuilt, and anarchitecture, it develops the concept of paper-becoming, defining architectural production as a mental, poetic, and critical process independent of material construction. The research frames paper-becomings within two thematic axes: Structure — freeing spatial configurations from the structural codes and sequences of their fragments (fragmentation, collage/montage, non-architectural elements, fiction–reality relations); Place — becomings against the actuality of place, becomings coextensive with the ground, and placeless becomings. Examples are examined comparatively, focusing less on formal resemblance than on how each engages with space and its making. The findings show that paper-becomings, by revealing the invisibility of interior space in speculative representations, generate multi-layered spatial imaginaries and offer a conceptual surface praxis that could encompass interior space in the future.

Kağıt-oluşlar: 1960 Sonrası Mimarlıkta Bir Yüzey Praksisi

Abstract

Bu çalışma, 1960 sonrası mimarlık ortamında modernizmin fiziksel inşa merkezli anlayışına karşı gelişen düşünsel, poetik ve spekülatif üretimleri inceler. Kağıt mimarlığı, unbuilt ve anarchitecture gibi yaklaşımları temel alarak geliştirilen kağıt-oluş kavramı, mimari üretimi maddi yapıdan bağımsız, zihinsel ve eleştirel bir inşa süreci olarak tanımlar. Araştırma, kağıt-oluşları tarihsel ve kuramsal bağlamda iki tematik eksende ele alır: Yapı — mekansal kurgunun fragmanlarının yapısal kod ve dizilimlerinden özgürleşmesi (parçalanma, kolaj/montaj, mimarlık-dışı unsurlar, kurgu–gerçek ilişkileri); Yer — yerin edimselliğine karşı-oluşlar, topoğrafyayla bütünleşen yerle bir-oluşlar ve bağlamdan kopan yersiz-oluşlar. Örnekler, karşılaştırmalı bir yaklaşımla, biçimsel benzerlikten çok mekanla kurulan ilişkiler üzerinden değerlendirilir. Bulgular, kağıt-oluşların iç mekanın spekülatif temsillerdeki görünmezliğini tartışmaya açarak, çok katmanlı mekansal tahayyüller üreten ve gelecekte iç mekanı da kapsayabilecek bir düşünsel yüzey praksisi sunduğunu ortaya koyar.
