Üniversite Mahallesinde Yer Duygusu İnşası: Muğla Kötekli Örneğinde Öğrenci-Mekân İlişkisi

Abstract

Bu çalışma, Muğla Sıtkı Koçman Üniversitesi’nin bitişiğinde gelişmiş olan Kötekli Mahallesi’nde yaşayan üniversite öğrencilerinin yer duygusu inşasını incelemektedir. 2000’li yılların başından itibaren öğrenci yoğun bir yerleşime dönüşen Kötekli; aidiyet, sosyal ilişkiler ve mekânsal algı açısından çelişkili dinamikler barındırmaktadır. Araştırmanın amacı, öğrencilerin geçici bir mekân ile kent arasındaki eşikte, kenti nasıl deneyimlediklerini, müzakere ettiklerini ve yeniden yorumladıklarını yer duygusu (sense of place) kavramı çerçevesinde ortaya koymaktır. Çalışma nitel yöntemlerle yürütülmüş, yarı yapılandırılmış derinlemesine görüşmeler ile eskiz haritalama (sketch mapping) uygulaması bir arada kullanılmıştır. Farklı sosyo-demografik özelliklere sahip 90 öğrenci ile yapılan görüşmelerde gündelik rutinler, yer kimliği, sosyal etkileşimler, aidiyet, güvenli/güvensiz bulunan mekânlar ve bireysel deneyimler sorgulanmıştır. Bulgular, öğrencilerin barınma, ulaşım, boş zaman ve sosyal ilişkiler üzerinden güçlü bir yer duygusu geliştirdiklerini göstermektedir. Ancak bu aidiyet çoğu zaman çelişkiler barındırmaktadır: Bazı mekânlar aidiyet ve sosyalliği güçlendirirken, bazıları güvensizlik, dışlanma ya da kentin bütünüyle kopukluk hislerini tetiklemektedir. Sosyal ilişkiler, ticari birimler ve kamusal alanlar öğrencilerin mekân deneyiminde merkezi rol oynasa da aynı zamanda eşitsizliklerin yeniden üretildiği alanlardır. Kötekli Mahallesi; öğrenci mahallesinde yaşam deneyiminin hem kapsayıcı hem dışlayıcı ikili doğasını örneklemektedir. Öğrencilerin barınma güvencesizliği, güvenlik kaygıları ve geçici yaşam evreleri altında yer duygusu inşa etme biçimlerini anlamak, üniversite yerleşimlerindeki kentsel dinamiklere dair önemli ipuçları sunmaktadır.

Constructing Sense of Place in a University Neighborhood: Student–Place Relations in the Case of Kötekli, Muğla

Abstract

This study examines the construction of sense of place among college students living in Kötekli, a neighborhood adjacent to Muğla Sıtkı Koçman University campus in southwestern Türkiye. While Kötekli has developed as a student-dominated settlement since the early 2000s, it presents contradictory dynamics of belonging, social interaction, and spatial perception. The research aims to reveal how young residents experience, negotiate, and reinterpret urban space in a transitional environment between campus and city. Methodologically, the study employs qualitative techniques, combining in-depth interviews with participatory sketch-mapping. In interviews conducted with 90 students, participants were asked about their daily routines, place identity, social interactions, sense of belonging, perceptions of safe/unsafe spaces, and individual experiences. The analysis draws on theoretical debates on sense of place, youth urbanism, and relational approaches to space. Findings demonstrate that students construct a strong sense of place around everyday practices such as housing, mobility, leisure, and peer networks. Yet this attachment is marked by ambivalence: while some spaces strengthen belonging and sociability, others evoke insecurity, marginalization, or detachment from the broader city. Social relations, commercial venues, and public spaces emerge as central to the experience of place, but these are also sites where inequalities are reproduced. The study concludes that Kötekli exemplifies the dualities of student neighborhoods as spaces of both inclusion and exclusion. Understanding how students build sense of place under precarious housing, safety concerns, and temporal life stages provides critical insights into urban dynamics in university towns.
