Efficient parking solutions in limited urban areas: a review of FAPS
Abstract
The spread of urbanization and the resulting increase in the number of vehicles have brought serious parking problems to metropolitan areas. This problem has multifaceted effects not only for individual drivers but also in terms of urban planning, traffic management, and environmental sustainability. This study examines Fully Automated Parking Systems (FAPS), developed to ensure more efficient use of limited urban space. The system's structural features, its impact on user experience, and the advantages it can offer at the city level are examined using a holistic approach. FAPS is a parking solution that minimizes human interaction and maximizes the efficient use of parking spaces through an automated vehicle acceptance and parking process. Compared to traditional parking lots, this system allows up to 60% more vehicles to be parked in the same area, reduces energy consumption and exhaust emissions, and increases safety and user comfort. The study also evaluated the technical components, capacity planning, advantages, and disadvantages of the FAPS and presented recommendations for integrating the system into the urban transportation infrastructure. The results show that FAPS is a practical, sustainable, and technological solution to the parking problem in today's cities. In this context, it is emphasized that FAPS should be considered a critical component in future innovative city models.
