CONSUMER ETHICS IN TÜRKİYE: A QUALITATIVE THEMATIC ANALYSIS

Abstract

Consumption decisions have direct and indirect effects on both living and non-living entities. These effects can be either positive or negative. Minimizing the negative impacts requires consumers to act responsibly and make more sustainable consumption choices. This study examines the phenomenon of consumer ethics within the context of Türkiye. The data were collected from four focus groups: three student groups representing different educational levels and one tradesmen group. The analysis resulted in the identification of six key themes: environment, animal welfare, copyright infringement, economic factors, ethical consumption consciousness, and purchasing/consumption practices. The findings indicate that ethical consumption consciousness has not yet developed sufficiently and that economic factors play a significant role in ethical consumption decisions. While participants emphasized the role of family and educational institutions in fostering ethical consumption, they also highlighted the need for governmental support through regulatory measures. Notably, human rights, which constitute an important dimension of consumer ethics, did not emerge as a salient theme. This study underscores the importance of cultural context on consumer ethics.
