A comparative study on the effectiveness of listening to music and Qur’anic murottal on students’ concentration and study productivity

Abstract

This study aims to compare the effectiveness of listening to music and Qur’anic murottal in enhancing concentration levels and study productivity among university students. A descriptive quantitative approach with an ex post facto design was employed. The study involved 150 undergraduate students from Trunojoyo University Madura, selected using purposive sampling based on specific criteria: active enrollment, regular listening habits of music or murottal during study, and voluntary participation. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire consisting of 20 items measured on a 4-point Likert scale. Instrument validation was conducted through expert review and pilot testing. Data analysis was performed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive model, supported by descriptive statistics via Microsoft Excel. The results indicated that listening to Qur’anic murottal had a more positive impact on students’ concentration and study productivity compared to music. This effect is attributed to the calming rhythm, absence of lyrical distraction, and spiritual dimension of murottal. In contrast, instrumental music with a slow tempo was found to be moderately supportive, especially for tasks requiring a relaxed atmosphere. The findings suggest that Qur’anic murottal can be a more effective alternative for enhancing academic focus and performance.
