Abstract

The subject of «Translations from Russian fiction into Turkish» should be investigated at various stages. The process of Ottoman europeanization in all public areas began approximately at the beginning of the 19th century and had grown considerably by the end of the century. With this in mind, it is impossible to consider it merely a coincidence that the play «The Woes of Wit» by Griboedov was the first translation from Russian toTurkish in 1883. After all the translator of this play, Меhmet Мurat (known under the pseudonym Мizancı Мurat) was the progressive public figure of the time and, as he said, he considered himself similar to the hero of this drama.
