The usage of cement based mortars under mosaics had been considered as one of the methods for their restoration in the past. After the negative effects of cement on traditonal materials were determined, particularly in European museums, removal of the cement based layer from thousands squaremeters of mosaics has come up. There are 600m² of mosaics treated with cement in the mentioned way as a layer beneath existing in Gaziantep Museum. Mosaic named as ‘Okeanos and Tethys’ has been restored after the removal of this additional layer. The methods and the materials used through the restoration process of the mosaics are explained in this essay.
