ANALYSING THE ANCIENT MORTARS BY SIMPLE AND ADVANCED METHODS

Year 2009, Issue: 3, 65 - 73, 01.09.2009

Abstract

The methods in analysing the ancient mortar samples vary according to the conservation purpose and the data needed. Some simple methods give the information of the reparation material’s characteristics thal will provide the compliance with the original material. But if the history of the mortar samples and the building are in case of need, advanced analysis methods will be necessary. Chemical analysing methods are not always sufficient for those kinds of information. Besides that the structural features should be researched. Advanced analysing techniques enables us to understand the resolution process and the technology of the ancient mortars. In this case study, the mortar samples taken from a 15th century building in Istanbul are examined in both simple and advanced ways. Comparing the simple and advanced methods, it’s understood that using the simple and cheaper methodology of determining the ingredients of the mortar which will be used in reparation is sufficient
