The present paper deals with the scientific research related to the characterization of the Land Walls of Yedikule- Istanbul Constantinople . For characterization purposes simple chemical analysis and petrographic analysis can be adequate, also certain information for the deterioration process can be derived from the aforementioned tests. However, for understanding the ancient production techniques, promenance of the materials and the complicated deterioration processes further scientific research based on instrumental analyses such as DTA, ICP, X-Ray Diffraction, SEM-EDX and Mercury Intrusion tests were conducted. By the results of the tests, the binder and aggregate types and ratios of the mortars were determined. Further more, the physical and mechanical properties and water soluble salt contents of the mortar samples were investigated. It was determined that the brick pieces, limestone particles and river sand were used as aggregate in these lime mortar samples. And, the deterioration causes are water soluble salts originating from sea spray and polluted air.
