In the Byzantine period, Chora Kariye was erected as the church of a monastery near Edirnekapı. Just after the conquest of Istanbul, the church converted into a mosque. During the Ottoman period, in the close vicinity of the edifice; the madrasah, dervish lodges, tombs, fountains and an imaret have been built and Chora became the center of this complex. After the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey in 1923; as part of the studies on the restoration of the Byzantine monuments, supported by the Byzantine Institute of America and Dumbarton Oaks, the edifice has been restored and converted into a museum in 1945. This article intends to undertake the structural history of the Chora in two distinct parts, the Byzantine and Ottoman periods and the architectural restoration carried out of the edifice during the Republican period, will be studied under a separate heading
